What?

Beforeplay is a social cause campaign I created
to help provide accessible and inclusive sexual
health education.

The campaign  includes 2D, 3D, and Screen Based components as well as a fully curated brand book.

Why?

Education surrounding health and sexual information often uses an abstinence-only approach that focuses solely on cisgender heterosexual couples. This results in unawareness of how topics such as STIs
and contraceptives translate to LGBTQ+ relationships and creates a culture where
sex is demonized and weaponized.

How?
With this campaign the goal was to focus on
placing these “private” topics into a public setting
to normalize conversations about safe sex. I began
by pinpointing and researching my target audience,
and establishing a voice and tone which would
later dictate my visuals for the campaign.

Then, I began brainstorming taglines and sketching ideas for 2D and 3D components.

The Name & Tagline Beforeplay is a play on words meant to suggest that you should be able to talk about your actions before acting on them. The inclusion of the word “foreplay,” uses suggestive language to indicate a sex-positive approach.
This campaign combines “Come prepared” and “Just say Sex.” These taglines function as a call to action, using innuendos to encourage the audience to educate themselves.

“Just Say Sex” asks people to simply talk about the topic and say the word “sex.”

If Retro Were Modern

I wanted the campaign visuals to feel ‘retro’ to create a contast between the curriculum of the past and the one that this campaign offers. This also aludes to the  scary idea that societies views on inclusion and education are not so far from (or even returning to) what they were back then.

The Truck

This truck is the initial place where people will interact with the campaign. It would drive around city streets, attending festivals and college campus events. Thus, placing the subject of sex, which is often designated for whispers in private, into a very public setting.

Interactive True
or False Game

Outside the truck, a screen displays true or false questions with relevant information about sexual health topics often not discussed in sex ed classes. The audience can join with their phones. This allows users to play with their friends or compare answers, inviting open dialogue about sex and education in a low-pressure, fun, and engaging way.

Packaging
These contraceptive and STI prevention materials are free at the truck and around the event or college campus. The packaging for these items features a fill-in-the-blanks statement of "I want you to____ my____" gently encouraging partners to bring up their desires and open dialogue at the moment to promote understanding and education.

Poster Set
This poster series is designed to be informative, humorous, and eye-catching. Each poster in the series is focused on a sexual health topic that is often left out of sexual education discussions.

This series aims to inform and be visually appealing, inviting people to display these posters on their walls. Therefore, the contrast between private and public, introduced by the truck, is continued into individual homes.

Post Cards
This set of postcards is designed for gifting to a partner. Each postcard highlights a popular euphemism for sex, with an illustration designed to illuminate the absurdity of this alternative phrase.

Stickers
In addition to the three illustrations introduced in the gift cards, these stickers include a series of one-line statements calling attention to a problem with the uninclusive education of the past.

Card Game
Beforeplay (The Game) is designed to start conversations and encourage dialogue about sex and sexual health. The Game is intended to be played between friends or partners and includes different modes of play to adjust to the context. These modes are distinguished by colour, and while the cards for partners feature more questions focused on the experience together, players are encouraged to explore both sets with whomever they choose.

The Game features questions about sexual encounters, interests, experimentation, STI testing, and more. Players can choose which questions they feel comfortable with and even work their way through as they feel more confident in the topic.
